The Inter-School Math Olympics is a program that is designed
to promote enjoyment of mathematics. Students in the second through
fifth grades from private, Catholic, and public schools in the
Bay Area come together in a friendly competitive enironment.
Oratorical Fest:
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Fest, presented by
the Oakland Unified School District, gives students from public and
private schools the opportunity to give orations of the works of
African-American writers and poets.
Career Day:
Students are able to listen to and interact with successful African-American
business professionals, entrepreneurs, and career specialists that
encourage them to aspire to achieve their dreams.
Family Literacy Night:
Students are encouraged to read, read, read. Family Literacy Night
brings families together to listen to and read stories. An author
is invited to come and read a book he/she has written. Students
are recognized with certificates and prizes for participation in
the Reading Project leading up to Literacy Night. Students are
given books to take home to add to their home libraries.
African American Read In:
A program to celebrate African-American literacy sponsored by
the Black Caucus of the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of
English) and endorsed by the International Reading Association.
Volunteer readers select stories by African-American authors to
read to the students to enhance their awareness, interest, and
appreciation of African-American literature.
Social Activities
October Harvest Fest:
In recognition and celebration of God's bounty of food, students
research and share information on foods of the bible and foods
that come from the earth. Students celebrate with a special "feast"
luncheon and outdoor fun activities.
UniverSoul Circus:
An activity enjoyed by the young and young at heart. Students
and parents are able to witness the incredible talent and showmanship
and enjoy exciting entertainment at an exclusively African American
circus.
Spring Carnival:
An activity students enjoy at their school site. Games, food
and fun are made possible by the participation of parents, faculty
and staff of the academy.
School Picnic:
To celebrate the closing of a successful year, students, parents,
faculty and staff of the academy come together for fun, food
and fellowship at a local park.
School Savings Program:
Students are provided the opportunity to develop skills of responsibility,
discipline, and money management by opening a personal savings account.
Weekly deposits are made by students to their accounts.
